Meet the Creator of Mr n Mrs Moon

You created Mr n Mrs Moon in 2021. What inspired you to start this project?

The idea came from the fact that my daily life with Mr Moon (my husband) was so childish and funny, and I often couldn't stop laughing! So I really wanted to record these daily moments, and I started practising on 3D animation.

Why the moon? You know the saying ‘The moon is always following me’. Ever since I was a child, I’ve found the moon mysterious and interesting, as if it would accompany me every night. Mr Moon and I are very introverted in real life, and especially like the tranquillity of the night. The lonely and mysterious image of the moon represents us well, so I created a 3D character that has a body, looks joyful and belongs only to the moonlight tribe, to present our daily life to everyone in an interesting way.

Can you describe the dynamic between Mr Moon and Mrs Moon? How do their personalities complement each other?

Mr Moon and Mrs Moon interact just like us in real life. The two of them always lovingly bicker and just be funny — they’re like children, and they laugh at cute and silly things.

Although he talks dryly and makes fun of Mrs Moon, you can see from the small things that Mr Moon is actually a warm man who always takes care of and encourages Mrs Moon. Especially when Mrs Moon is depressed, Mr Moon always has some tricks to make her happy.

Mrs Moon is a bit lazy and loves to sleep, but she’s relaxed and cheerful. Her sense of humour brings Mr Moon positive energy all the time. With their world of magical sounds and their superb dancing skills, Mr Moon's life is always filled with laughter and happiness. As long as the two of them are together, it’s the sweetest and happiest moment in the world.

What has been the most memorable reaction you’ve received from your audience?

Because I’m a sentimental person, sometimes I suddenly get into a negative mood. Mr Moon is an encouraging character, inspiring me and rekindling my enthusiasm for life, so I really want to bring this positive energy to everyone.

I once received a private message from one of the Moonlight Tribe saying that she was originally in a very low mood, but when she saw moon moon’s post, she couldn’t help but laugh. Her mood instantly improved, and she felt encouraged and healed. Our story reminded her of the little blessings in life. This kind of feedback makes me realise that my creations are meaningful, and I hope to continue to use my work to bring a ray of light to people’s lives. This is the biggest driving force for my creations.

What do you like most about Starstreet, and how did you conceptualise the themes for these installations and premiums?

Starstreet not only has a very unique appearance, a blend of old and new, but also contains an authentic Hong Kong style. Small shops with modern decoration, streets full of history and a strong sense of art are intertwined, plus there’s a warm community atmosphere. Thinking back to the first time I strolled through this small garden in the busy city, I felt very comfortable and at ease. My originally tense mood eased, and my inspiration suddenly emerged, imagining the cute appearance of the moon moon appearing in different corners of Starstreet. How can one not be fascinated by this kind of charm?

Mr Moon and Mrs Moon love to stay at home, so for this moon moon Mid-Autumn Festival party, we directly turned the outdoor space of Starstreet into moon moon’s home. We invite everyone to join the lively party, dance with the moon moon and enjoy the carnival with the moonlight tribe!

How long did it take to bring these installations from concept to completion, and what was the process? 

From conception to the presentation of moon moon, it took more than two months. We started with the concept and realised the fantastic idea step by step. The production process challenged me, from thinking about a suitable theme to designing expressions and movements that are cute and interactive for the Moonlight Clan, selecting thoughtful styles and designs and going through countless fine-tuning and modifications of the 3D model and other designs. After that, finally we could realise the moon moon that everyone loves. I hope everyone likes this work and takes some beautiful photos and cute animations with moon moon.

Do you have a personal favourite among the installations? What makes it stand out to you?

My personal favourite is of course the AR interactive stage! The unique design not only combines moon moon’s iconic dance with a stage composed of moon moon’s home elements, but also allows everyone to let themselves go and dance crazily with moon moon!
