The allure of the sun is undeniable — it beckons us to bask in its warmth, but without proper protection, it can also be a formidable foe. Luckily, protecting your skin from its harmful effects is easier than ever thanks to a constant array of new protective beauty and fashion saviours entering our shelves.

Here, ahead of another scorching summer, The Style Sheet shares five top sun protection tips and a series of products that help you enjoy the sun safely.

1. Slather Sunscreen & Repeat

Here’s a startling truth: most people don’t apply enough sunscreen. To be effective, adults need about six teaspoons of sunscreen to cover their entire body – that’s roughly the volume of a shot glass. For your face alone, aim for half a teaspoon. Think you’re done? Think again. Reapplication is key — do it every two hours, more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating. This might seem excessive, but when it comes to sun protection, more is truly more.

2. Don’t Forget the Often-Missed Spots

We diligently coat our arms, legs and face, but often neglect other areas. Pay special attention to these commonly overlooked spots: your ears, the back of your neck, your hands and your feet. And if you’re sporting a haircut that leaves parts of your scalp exposed, make sure to protect those areas too. Lips are another frequently forgotten area — a swipe of SPF-infused lip balm will keep them safe and moisturised.

3. Embrace Broad-Spectrum Protection

Not all sunscreens are created equal. To ensure you’re shielded from both UVA and UVB rays, opt for a broad-spectrum formula. UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, while UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn. Look for a sunscreen with at least SPF30 for daily use, but consider going higher if you’re spending extended periods outdoors. If you’re also wearing make-up, opt for a foundation-SPF hybrid but don’t skip your base layer of sunscreen. This is because the SPF in make-up alone won’t typically give you enough protection.

4. Sun-Protective Clothing is a Game Changer

Why rely solely on sunscreen when you can bolster your defence with sun-protective clothing? Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants and wide-brimmed hats can significantly reduce your exposure to harmful rays. Lululemon is one of the brands leaning into the movement, offering an edit of clothing and accessories with UV protection. Don’t underestimate the power of a good pair of sunglasses either — they protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them from UV damage while also helping to prevent cataracts.

5. Seek Shade

Even the most diligent sunscreen applier can benefit from spending time in the shade. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense. If you’re out and about during peak hours, find shade under trees, umbrellas or canopies. Using shade as a supplement to sunscreen and protective clothing provides a triple-layered approach to sun safety.
